The Samuel Johnson Birthplace Museum and Bookshop is a must for bibliophiles. This museum celebrates the life and times of a giant of English literary & cultural history. Although called the Birthplace Museum, he actually spent his first 27 years at this residence – his father’s bookshop. A short walk from here takes you to Lichfield Cathedral, the truly awesome three-spired gothic cathedral, steeped in history and bordered by the attractive Cathedral Close with its medieval courtyard. Here you’ll also find Erasmus Darwin House with its tranquil Herb Garden. After all this intellectual and spiritual nourishment you may want to visit one, or several, of the city’s pubs, bars and restaurants. Great places to eat, depending on your budget, include the Michelin-Starred Upstairs by Tom, the Quill & Scholar, and the atmospheric Tudor of Lichfield.
Places to quaff include the Whippet micropub, the Spiritualist, and a favourite of ours, the Beerbohm. Everything is within strolling distance in this beautiful, historic city.
